Would Nathan Jones give up Luton project for Sunderland instability?

Nathan Jones has already been in charge of Luton for over 100 games. The last manager to do that at Sunderland was Roy Keane.

Sunderland are still on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Simon Grayson after just four months and with the club sitting rock bottom of the Championship.

Several candidates have been named as potential successors to Grayson, with Luton Town boss Nathan Jones having emerged as one of the latest – according to Luton Today – and is now the 5/1 second favourite with Skybet.

Jones has been building a solid reputation for himself after taking his first managerial job in January 2016 having been assistant at Brighton and Hove Albion previously.

That season he guided the Bedfordshire side to an 11th place finish, before missing out on promotion the following year after losing to Blackpool in the playoffs.

This term Luton are currently third in League Two and two points off leaders Notts County and are the highest scorers in the entire EFL with 34 goals.

Last month Jones celebrated his 100th game in charge of the club. The last Black Cats manager to reach the same milestone was Roy Keane, who quit the job in 2008 after reaching a century.

Since then nine permanent bosses have come and gone at the Stadium Of Light, with Grayson’s 18 matches in charge not even the lowest tally – that unfortunate record goes to Paolo Di Canio, who lasted just 13 fixtures.

There is every chance Jones will be promoted in 2017/18 and with significant financial backing at Kenilworth Road could make a real fist of repeating that in League One in the coming years.

Would the 44 year old really want to risk all that for a club that the Hatters could well be playing next year and a job that, if recent history is anything to go by, lasts just 42 games on average.
