Leeds United’s Mirco Antenucci shoots
Former Leeds United striker Mirco Antenucci has admitted he could have headed to a Championship rival this summer.
The Italian striker did not have his contract at Leeds renewed in the summer and he left after two years with the club.
Speaking to Calciomercato, Antenucci told how he had an offer to stay in England with the Royals after his Leeds contract expired:
“I had another significant [offer], from Reading, who are now fifth in the Championship, but I decided to go back.
“I wanted to go back to the B, I wanted the girls to go to kindergarten in Italy. It was a perfect choice, because it has fulfilled all my wishes.”
So would the signing of Antenucci given Reading the edge over Leeds this season?
At the moment it looks as if Leeds may just get the better of the Berkshire side, but if Reading had a more potent striker then they would perhaps be clear of Leeds and fighting for the top two.
Leeds for instance have Chris Wood, who has netted 27 goals whilst Yann Kermogant has just 10 this season for Reading.
Antenucci, who eventually joined SPAL, is now helping guide them toward Serie A with 12 goals this season.
Of course, it was never a likely move, as Antenucci had his heart set on a return home. But if Reading had a more potent striker, they could be clear of Leeds.
