Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is interested in bringing RB Leipzig defender Marvin Compper to Scotland from the Bundesliga.

Marvin Compper may have struggled for game time at RB Leipzig this season but that should not put Celtic off making him their first January signing.

The 32-year-old was a regular as the nouveau riche Leipzig finished second in their maiden Bundesliga season, after all, helping the club qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their short history. And with Celtic desperate for a solid and reliable centre-back, Compper, a one-time Germany international, certainly fits the bill.

Just to sweeten the deal, the Daily Record adds that the defender, who has just 18 months remaining on his contract, will be available for as little as £1 million with Leipzig’s sporting director Ralf Rangnick open to offers.

Celtic have made a habit of pulling off impressive bargain deals over the last few years. And while Compper doesn’t exactly fit into their typical buy low and sell high transfer policy, he would bring both experience and versatility to a Celtic backline that has lacked both those attributes in a season disrupted by injuries.

Compper would offer some much needed depth with Brendan Rodgers likely to rotate his squad to keep players fresh during their assault on both domestic and European fronts.

Bargain deals are increasingly rare in the modern game so Celtic should jump at the chance of signing a Bundesliga runner-up for as little as one measly million.
