If Sheffield Wednesday lose to managerless Barnsley this weekend then they could be in a Championship relegation scrap.
Sheffield Wednesday are currently on a six-match unbeaten run in the Championship which stretches back to before Jos Luhukay was appointed as manager on January 5.
Their goal at home to Birmingham City in a 3-1 defeat at the weekend was also the first they had scored in the second tier of English football during that time, also suffering defeats to Brentford and Burton Albion and 0-0 stalemates with rivals Sheffield United, Cardiff City and Middlesbrough.
Next up for the Owls is a trip to managerless Barnsley in a lunchtime kickoff on Saturday (February 10) and a loss to their Yorkshire rivals could put Luhukay’s men in serious relegation trouble.
There is currently a six-point gap between the Tykes – who will have Under-23s boss Paul Hartley in caretaker charge following Paul Heckingbottom’s departure to Leeds United – and Wednesday in the lower reaches of the table.
Bottom three Burton, Sunderland and Hull City continue to struggle for form, but Birmingham and Bolton Wanderers are on the rise and could soon drag the Sheffield outfit into a dogfight.
For a side that finished the last two seasons in fourth and sixth place respectively, thus securing a playoff place, this would be quite the fall from grace and there is a lot riding on the result from Oakwell.
