Rangers sold Barrie McKay to Nottingham Forest – and have reportedly identified Lewis Morgan or Jamie Walker as potential replacements.

With the January transfer window just two months away, it appears that a new winger is at the top of Rangers’ list of priorities.

The Scottish Sun reported in September that The Gers were hopeful of finally landing Hearts’ Jamie Walker in the New Year after having two bids turned down in the summer.

And Rangers have also been heavily linked with a move for St Mirren’s rising star Lewis Morgan, per the Daily Record, a 21-year-old wideman who started his career in the Ibrox club’s academy and has eight goals in 17 games so far this season.

If Rangers had not made that increasingly baffling decision to sell Barrie McKay in the summer, however, perhaps they would not need to bring in reinforcements in January.

The 22-year-old was arguably the most gifted and promising player in the Glasgow giants’ squad. But, after falling out of favour with former manager Pedro Caixinha, he was sold to Nottingham Forest for just £500,000 (The Sun) – a fraction of his true market value.

The majority of Rangers supporters were understandably frustrated with the deal at the time. And with McKay topping the Championship’s assist charts with seven, not to mention scoring four times himself and staking a claim to be the league’s signing of the season, hindsight does not reflect well on Rangers getting rid of their Scottish starlet.

McKay, who made his name at Ibrox under his current Forest boss Mark Warburton, would have been one of the best players in Scotland had he replicated his stunning City Ground form north of the border.

Overall, McKay arguably has far more potential than either Walker or Morgan. Whoever Rangers bring in must prove that they are anything other than a downgrade.
