Leeds United fans want experience and proven Championship quality – their director of football could deliver a teenage winger from Poland.
Danny Rose would not have been too impressed by Leeds United’s plethora of summer signings. After all, Google came in rather handy indeed when Ezgjan Alioski, Jay-Roy Grot, Mateusz Klich and co arrived at Elland Road over the summer.
With Leeds on a run of six defeats in seven games, however, director of football Victor Orta has come under severe fire from frustrated supporters. Understandably so.
After all, the majority of his imported arrivals, including out-of-favour goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald, out-of-form striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga (below) and the anonymous Pawel Cibicki, are yet to live up to expectations in the Championship.
As a result, Leeds fans are wondering why Orta did not sign players who know the league – instead putting together a multicultural squad of players unfamiliar with English football.
And with the January window two months away, it’s clear what the Elland Road faithful want from the under-fire transfer guru – proven and experienced Championship players with the knowledge and the nous to turn around a season that appears to be falling apart.
What Leeds fans are not asking for is a 19-year-old winger from Poland. The president of Ekstraklasa side Lech Poznan told sport.pl on Wednesday that Leeds had made a £180,000 offer for teenager Kamil Jozwiak – a player with just 40 senior appearances to his name.
Now, Jozwiak may be one of the most exciting young talents in Polish football. But he is unlikely to make the required impression in a side that has dramatically lost its way in recent weeks.
Clearly, Leeds need experience and proven Championship quality rather than risky imports who could be either the second coming of Samu Saiz or a disappointing flop like Mateusz Klich. There can be no guarantees where Jozwiak falls on that scale.
