The Everton midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
One player whose name was always going to be mentioned in some capacity during this transfer window is Ross Barkley, with the midfielder into the final six months of his Everton contract.
Barkley has yet to play a competitive game this season due to injury but he is closing in on a return to action and there is a possibility that he could secure a move away from Goodison Park during this transfer window.
It has long been thought that Barkley could eventually join Tottenham Hotspur, where he could surely thrive under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino.
However, it now appears that Tottenham face competition to sign Barkley from Chelsea, as reported by The Mirror.
It is clear to see why Chelsea would be interested in bringing in Barkley given his excellent passing and ability to weave past players.
If Barkley did join Chelsea then it would represent a setback for Tottenham given that the 24-year-old has been linked with them for so long.
The blow would be softened by the fact that Tottenham already possess an array of creative stars, including Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela and Son Heung-min, but bringing in Barkley would surely be welcomed by the club’s supporters, and the possibility of him joining Chelsea instead must be difficult to take.
As reported by the Mirror, Barkley pulled the plug on a late £25million move to Chelsea last summer because he was aware of Tottenham’s interest. However, if he now opts for the Blues rather than Spurs it could be a bitter blow for Pochettino as he bids to further strengthen his already impressive squad.
