Tony Cascarino has criticised Newcastle United winger and reported Tottenham Hotspur target Allan Saint-Maximin in The Times for his performance against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday.

The former Chelsea star has said that he would have hated to play with Saint-Maximin, saying that the Newcastle winger’s passing is not very good.

Newcastle lost the Carabao Cup final to Manchester United on Sunday.

Saint-Maximin, who has been linked with Tottenham, had the chance to make it matter for the Magpies, but the 25-year-old did not have his best game against Manchester United.

According to the Sunday People (19/2; pg 62), Tottenham have been following the winger for a while and could make a move for the Newcastle player in the summer transfer window.

Cascarino wrote: “I would have hated playing with Allan Saint-Maximin, who often launches opposition counterattacks with bad, lateral passes towards the middle.”

Improvement needed

Now, we know that Allan Saint-Maximin is a very talented and dynamic winger who can put the opposition under real pressure.

However, the Newcastle United winger star does need to improve overall and become more effective.

Saint-Maximin is very good on the ball, but the Tottenham-linked player does not always tend to very productive in the end.

That needs to be looked at.

There is a reason why the 25-year-old winger does not start week in and week out for Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.

Saint-Maximin has made seven starts and eight substitute appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle so far this season.

The winger has scored one goal and given three assists in those games.
