David Moyes is set to leave West Ham United, reports the BBC, despite the manager guiding the club away from the relegation zone.
That was Moyes’ task when the Scot was appointed as Slaven Bilic’s successor in November and in the end the Hammers finished nine points clear of the drop zone in 13th.
The 55-year-old was only given a short term contract until the end of the season, which expired on Sunday (May 13) night, and despite having talks with the hierarchy at the London Stadium the following day it seems no new deal is likely.
What next?
Moyes will now be looking for his fifth new job in as many years since leaving Everton for Manchester United in 2013, having also managed Real Sociedad and Sunderland since.
Just before he was given the West Ham position last year, he did admit that a return to Goodison Park – where he spent 11 years as boss – would be appealing.
“If the job came up I would be interested, but I’ve got other interests as well,” Moyes told beIN Sports.
“Bill [Kenwright] is one of the best chairmen so anyone who does get the job will be working with a really good chairman who’s incredibly supportive.
“I had 11 great years there – I loved it. Sometimes going back isn’t always the answer but Jose Mourinho went back to Chelsea and won the league, and now Jupp Heynckes is back at Bayern Munich.”
At the time Ronald Koeman had been sacked and David Unsworth was caretaker, but the Toffees could be on the hunt again very shortly with the Mirror reporting current chief Sam Allardyce will also be axed.
In that scenario would the Merseysiders consider bringing back Moyes; someone who guided them to their highest ever Premier League finish of fourth back in 2004/05?
