Wolves are targeting Chris Martin with Derby County prepared to cash in – but Leeds United should also take a look.
Fortunately for Gary Rowett, there is no shortage of striking options at Derby County this season.
The Rams couldn’t buy a goal at times in 2016/17 but, with Matej Vydra in fine form, backed up by David Nugent and Sam Winnall, Derby have found it far easier to hit the net this season.
So much so that Chris Martin could even be allowed to leave in the January transfer window. The Sun (3rd November, page 65) claims that Derby could cash in on the striker in order to fund signings in the New Year and Championship leaders Wolves have made him their top priority.
But Wolves are not the only side who could do with one more centre-forward. Leeds United fans have been clamouring for the addition of a proven Championship goalscorer – and Martin is exactly that.
The Scotland international was Derby’s top scorer for three straight seasons between 2013 and 2016 and enjoyed a decent spell on loan at Fulham in 2016/17. His 10 goals in 30 starts helped the ultra-attacking Cottagers seal a place in the play-offs at the expense of Leeds.
Though Martin has fallen down the pecking order at Derby, starting just four league games all season, he clearly has a lot to offer at this level.
And unlike the strikers currently on Leeds’ books, Pierre-Michel Lasogga, Jay-Roy Grot and the lively but goalless Caleb Ekuban, Martin knows what it takes to score regularly at this level.
So perhaps they should consider throwing their hat into the ring.
