Should Celtic go after Liverpool’s Danny Ings this summer?

Dnny Ings of Liverpool warms up prior to the Premier League 2 match between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool at The Lamex Stadium on February 5, 2018 in Stevenage, England.

Liverpool fans on Twitter slammed Danny Ings for his performance against Stoke City on Saturday.

The 25-year-old was given a rare 90 minutes against the Potters but would have struggled to justify Jurgen Klopp’s decision to start him.

The former Burnley striker is rapidly running out of time to convince Klopp that he deserves to stay with Liverpool next season and, should he be allowed to leave, Celtic should be top of the queue.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers signed him for the Anfield club back in 2015 and surely he wouldn’t baulk at the chance to bring him to Parkhead, if he is available.

Two long-term knee injuries have stunted his progress at Liverpool but he has been consistently fit since the turn of the year and the Hoops manager should take a look – especially if he loses Moussa Dembele, which looks very probable.

They won’t be the only club interested, because West Brom and Newcastle were linked in January, but the Baggies look set for relegation and Rafael Benitez might now want a more prolific goalscorer to lead the Magpies next season.

According to Total Sportek, he is on around £60,000 per week on Merseyside, which could be a stumbling block for Celtic, but he might consider a wage cut if it meant reuniting with a manager who at one point obviously believed in his talents.

Rodgers is a fantastic man-manager and if Ings – valued at £5.9 million according to CIES, Football Observatory – has to accept a reduction in salary to rebuild his career then it might be a small price to pay.
