Celtic’s Scottish Premiership winning manager Brendan Rodgers is reportedly top of Aston Villa’s hit-list as Championship club eye a Steve Bruce replacement.

Scottish football is enjoying something of a resurgence right now.

With Steven Gerrard at Ibrox, Rangers looking like the real deal again and the Edinburgh giants Hearts and Hibernian starting the season very impressively, there is more reason than ever for the neutrals to take an interest in football above the border.

And, in another major boost, the BBC reported this week that the SPFL have concluded an agreement with broadcaster BeIN Sports to show Scottish football across the world.

But while Celtic’s recent struggles suggest that this season could be the most exciting in years, suggestions that Brendan Rodgers could leave the nation’s dominant force for a side in England’s second tier perhaps threatens the progress Scottish football has made of late.

According to The Sun, Rodgers is ‘leading the race’ to be the new manager of Aston Villa.

And the prospect of the former Liverpool boss returning to England cannot be ruled out, especially as his relationship with chief executive Peter Lawell are understood to be strained right now.

Now, Aston Villa are a massive club with huge potential of course. But losing Rodgers would not only be bad news for Celtic but a worrying sign for Scottish football as a whole, merely reinforcing the view that it’s most talented coaches and players are unlikely to stay for the long haul.
