Aston Villa fans are excited at the prospect of signing Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as fresh rumours emerged.

The Guardian have claimed that Villa are stepping up their pursuit for the goalkeeper and he could land a pay rise if he switches North London for the West Midlands.

This has excited the Villa Park supporters, who are backing the idea of signing the 28-year-old after he impressed for Arsenal after football restarted.

It has to be questioned whether Martinez would be in this situation, or whether Villa would be pushing for him if Bernd Leno didn’t suffer an injury against Brighton in June.

That unfortunate clash with the now-unpopular Neal Maupay ended Leno’s season and pushed Martinez as Mikel Arteta’s number one, and he has thrived since.

That has seemingly alerted Villa, who already have four senior goalkeepers on their books, but a lot of it is complicated.

Arsenal’s record transfer deals

  1. Nicolas Pepe

    £72 million

  2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

    £56 million

  3. Alexandre Lacazette

    £52 million

  4. Thomas Partey

    45 million

  5. Mesut Ozil

    £42 million

Tom Heaton is still recovering from injury, Orjan Nyland was dropped during the restart, Lovre Kalinic was out on loan last season and Jed Steer is seemingly seen as a back-up in the Premier League rather than a number one, even though he played a big part in the club earning promotion in 2019.

It all then points towards trying to secure Martinez’s signature and the Villa faithful are all for it.

If it comes down to what’s in the bank then Villa have the pounds to put on the table, it’s just a case of trying to get the best possible deal for them.
