Versatile, technically-gifted, homegrown and ready for the rigours of first-team football; just why on earth would Wolverhampton Wanderers think about selling Dion Sanderson?

That is the question on the lips of every Wolves fan as speculation surrounding the youngster’s future ramps up ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Mail claim that Wednesfield-born Sanderson is likely to go, his contract expiring in 2022.

Despite his obvious talent – and a couple of highly impressive loan spells at Cardiff and Sunderland – Wolves are yet to tie the 21-year-old down to a new, long-term deal. Why, is anyone’s guess.

Understandably, a whole host of Championship clubs have taken an interest. Sanderson also has admirers elsewhere in the Premier League, at Crystal Palace and Brighton and Hove Albion (Mail).

And the confusion, amongst Wolves supporters, is understandable.

After all, it’s not as if Nelson Semedo or Ki-Jana Hoever, signed for a combined £40 million last summer, have set the world alight on the right-hand side of Nuno’s defence – Sanderson’s preferred position.

The academy graduate has also impressed in the centre of a three-man backline at Sunderland since the turn of the year. It is not hard to imagine Sanderson slotting in nicely alongside Conor Coady, a more natural defensive option than the converted Leander Dendoncker.

As a miserable season limps towards an underwhelming conclusion, the prospect of one of Wolves’ most exciting, homegrown youngsters joining a direct Premier League rival is not something the fans are willing to accept.
