Jamaal Lascelles has told Chronicle Live that it would be a ‘dream come true’ to lift a trophy at Newcastle United, and feels their season starts now following the Saudi-led takeover.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers bought the Magpies from Mike Ashley for £305m. Reports have since linked the St James’ Park side with a myriad of stars, from Boubacar Kamara and Niklas Sule to Ousmane Dembele.
Lascelles hopes the PIF’s purchase of Newcastle will allow the club to now challenge for silverware previously out of reach. The Toon advanced to the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup last term for the first time in four seasons. They have also only reached the quarter-final of the FA Cup once since 2005/06. Also exiting at the first hurdle nine times since.

Newcastle exited the EFL Cup at the first hurdle this season, with Burnley beating a Steve Bruce-led side on penalties. They will hope to avoid another third-round FA Cup exit when Premier League clubs enter the competition in January.
Lascelles eyes trophies with Newcastle
Lascelles will have his eyes on going all the way to Wembley when Newcastle enter the FA Cup. He says the takeover feels like a reset for United this season, and offers hope of titles.
“That would be amazing,” Lascelles said. “It’s what every sportsman wants, and they want to play for something. They want to say they have won silverware.
“For me to be the one to lift it – that’s a dream come true. And it would be for everybody in Newcastle. Now the takeover has happened, there is no better time to start the journey of success. We all want to be part of it – the season can start now again.”

Newcastle certainly need a reset in the Premier League under their new Saudi-led owners after a poor start this season. The Toon remain without a win after nine games, to sit 19th in the table above Norwich City. The Canaries have only drawn twice to United’s four so far.
Lascelles has started and captained Newcastle in six top-flight fixtures this term, but has not kept any clean sheets. The £40k-a-week centre-back also opened their EFL Cup defeat to Burnley under Bruce in August.
