According to Sky Sports News, Newcastle will move for Schlotterbeck if their pursuit of Sven Botman is unsuccessful.
The Dutch defender has been linked with Newcastle for quite some time, and while he’s reportedly fascinated by a move to St James’ Park, we wouldn’t blame him for turning the Magpies down – after all, the Tyneside club are in a relegation battle at present.
If Botman is to turn Newcastle down, Eddie Howe’s side will turn their attentions to Schlotterbeck, and it’s fair to say that fans are excited about that prospect.
Is Scholtterbeck any good?
Stats aren’t the be all and end all in football, but according to WhoScored’s algorithm, Schlotterbeck has been the best defender in the Bundesliga this season, and the ninth-best player in Germany overall.
Of course, you can’t always trust this rating system, but when he’s alongside the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland and Thomas Muller in the top 10, it’s fair to say he’s doing something right.
At the age of just 22, this is also a player with immense room to grow.
