Speaking on talkSPORT (7/2/23 8:15AM), Neil Warnock has been discussing Leeds’ search for a new manager and the idea of Marcelo Bielsa returning to Elland Road.
Inevitably, some Leeds fans have been clamouring for Bielsa to return to the club after helping them to promotion back in the 19/20 season and a top-half finish upon their return to the Premier League.
However, according to Warnock, Bielsa’s return would be a disaster, claiming that he’s heard in the past that the players were desperate for the Argentine to leave when he did.
Leeds warned
Warnock warned against hiring Bielsa.
“If they could get someone who gets that physical attribute out of them, they need to win the battles first. I don’t think there’s time for someone from abroad until the end of the season. I think Bielsa would be a disaster coming back. I listened to someone previously and I think the players were desperate for him to leave when he left, so I don’t think that would be the answer either,” Warnock said.
Never go back
They always say in football that you should never go back, and that saying does ring true here.
Yes, Bielsa is mightily popular amongst the fanbase, but let’s not forget, his Leeds team was being thrashed on a weekly basis towards the end of his time at Elland Road.
Bielsa was sacked not 12 months ago because he was taking the team towards relegation. What sort of message are you sending if you now re-hire him?
The players lost faith in him and his methods stopped working, there’s no reason to believe anything would’ve changed between then and now.
Leeds need to go forwards rather than backwards now.
