Could Aston Villa lose John Terry if they win promotion?
Aston Villa pulled off arguably the biggest surprise of last summer’s transfer window by luring Chelsea icon John Terry to the West Midlands.
Fast forward eight months and the Premier League legend has played a huge role in Aston Villa’s promotion bid, starting 21 Championship games for the Villans.
Steve Bruce’s side have only conceded six times in the last nine games that Terry has played and it’s obvious that the 37-year-old centre-back is doing his bit to help Aston Villa – who sit second in the table – win promotion back to the top flight.
Question is, can they keep him if he does help them get there?
Terry’s decision to drop down a division was linked with a desire to avoid facing former club Chelsea, whom he left in the summer after a 22-year stint with the London outfit.
There is understandably a lot of sentiment toward his old side and it’s pertinent to ask whether he’d quit Aston Villa when his one-year contract expires if they are back sharing a division with the Blues next season.
Even at 37, Terry would be a welcome presence with Villa in the top flight again next season.
But it seems plausible that the legendary defender – who according to The Telegraph is delaying talks of a contract extension until May – would snub that prospect for the same reason he joined a Championship side in the first place.
