Former Aston Villa star Stan Collymore believes reported manager target Steven Gerrard has what it takes to succeed Dean Smith at the club.

Posting on his official Twitter account, the ex-England international claimed that the Rangers boss could be worth the risk. Gerrard is one of the favourites to take over at Villa following Smith’s recent dismissal.

According to the Telegraph, Gerrard is keen on the Villa job. With the Birmingham club set to make an official approach for the SPL-winning manager in the next few days. Moreover, chief executive Christian Purslow is keen to appoint a new coach by next Monday.

Indeed, Gerrard was previously linked with the Newcastle United role before the Magpies decided on Eddie Howe this week. Yet now the Rangers coach looks likely to take over at Villa Park if a deal can be reached with the Glasgow giants.

Gerrard has formed a solid reputation for himself in Scotland. With Rangers impressing both in the SPL and the UEFA Europa League. And according to Collymore, the former Liverpool captain could be a good choice for Villa based on his three years with Rangers.

The former Villa star said on Gerrard: “Winner, ruthless, learned a lot at Rangers even in a 2-horse race. He’ll be average or special at Villa but not poor because he never has been. Worth the risk for potential reward.”

There are some obvious concerns surrounding Gerrard should he take the Villa job this week. However, the work the former England international has done at Rangers over the years is something to be admired. And the Midlands club should take the risk on the 41-year-old.

Gerrard’s brand of football will excite the Villa Park faithful. And with the financial backing of the club’s owners, the English manager could be well suited to take the Birmingham club to the next level following the work laid down by Smith.
