Lee Bowyer has certainly got Sunderland fans talking.

In quotes reported by The Chronicle, the Charlton Athletic boss has claimed that Sunderland have beaten him to the signing of an as-yet unnamed centre-forward. But who is he?

Well, no one seems to know just yet. But there is certainly a section of Black Cats fans who are hoping to see Fraizer Campbell make an eye-catching return to Wearside with just a few weeks until the new League One season kicks off.

The 31-year-old is a free agent after leaving Hull City earlier this summer. And, according to the Halifax Courier, he is training with non-league Brighouse Town as he mulls over what could be a crucial move in the autumn of his career.

Plenty of cynics have written off Campbell over the years but he enjoyed something of a renaissance on Humberside, putting his injury problems in the past and making 75 Championship appearances in just two seasons with The Tigers.

And while he’s hardly the most prolific striker in the Football League, his experience would undoubtedly boost a Sunderland side he previously represented with distinction between 2009 and 2013.

Campbell enjoyed some of the best years of his career on Wearside, even making an England debut seven years ago. They say you should never go back but Campbell has unfinished business and Sunderland want the League One title.
