Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Graeme Souness has been speaking about potentially returning to management and his time at Newcastle United.
The Scot has been out of the management game for 16 years now since being in charge of the Magpies, and he says that there is no way that he’d ever get back into management.
Indeed, Souness says that his time at St James’ Park has completely put him off management, stating that he didn’t enjoy the relationship he had with Freddy Shepherd and that it was a horrible job.
Souness hated Newcastle job
The pundit spoke about his managerial career.
“I don’t think anything would tempt me back into management. The relationship you have to have with the people upstairs who should be below you. I just do not want to be answerable to the type of people who are making football decisions. My last job, it was the worst job I had at Newcastle, it was a horrible job,” Souness said.
No room for him
Sadly, the time for Graeme Souness to be a manager has been and gone.
At the age of 69 after 16 years out of the game, he’s never going to get a job these days, and in all honesty, he’s not suited to the modern game.
These days, it’s as much about managing the owners as much as it is managing your players, and with every club employing some sort of Sporting Director these days, there’s no room for a no-nonsense manager like Souness anymore.
Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is up for debate, but one thing is for sure, Souness was lucky to get out of Newcastle before Mike Ashley arrived, because he wouldn’t have enjoyed working under him one bit.
