Leeds United’s Mateusz Klich was a lucky boy last night. Just ask Michael Brown.

The Poland international fired the Whites into an early lead against West Ham United at Elland Road.

It came from the penalty spot, but Klich needed two bites at the cherry after his first effort was effortlessly saved by Lukasz Fabianski, before VAR intervened and referee Michael Oliver ordered a retake after the Hammers stopper slightly moved off his line.

And it’s just as well because the 30-year-old’s original penalty was truly an awful one.

Klich’s first effort had no pace, very little direction and former Leeds midfielder Brown said on BBC Radio 5 Live that it was the ‘worst’ spot-kick he has ever seen.

He said: “Ohh we were wondering what he was going to do. He changes his side, Lukasz Fabianski has to stay central and Mateusz Klich punched it into the corner.

“The decision [to retake] was so cruel on West Ham, when it is milimetres it is hard to take. Klich has got away with one, it is the worst penalty I have ever seen.”

Fortunately for Klich and Leeds, the midfielder put a lot more effort into the second attempt and even had Fabianski guessed the right way, the former Arsenal keeper still probably wouldn’t have gotten near it.

Unfortunately for the hosts, though, things went downhill from there and David Moyes’s side recovered from the early setback to return to London with a 2-1 win.
