Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has been discussing the idea that Manchester City vs Liverpool is the greatest rivalry in Premier League history.

City vs Liverpool has been an all-time great rivalry, but controversy was sparked earlier this year when Jamie Carragher claimed in his Telegraph column that this rivalry is the greatest the Premier League has ever seen.

Ferdinand, of course, played a part in rivalries during his time at Manchester United, feuding with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, and the former centre-back can’t get his head around the idea of City vs Liverpool being the greatest rivalry.

What’s been said?

Ferdinand and his co-hosts were discussing the title race.

“If Liverpool only end up with a League Cup, I’m going to be unbearable. The greatest rivalry in the history of the Premier League they said. One Premier League title they’ve got,” Ferdinand’s Manchester United supporting co-host said.

“That was the worst comment. Who said that comment? The greatest rivalry in Premier League history? That is the worst comment I’ve heard in my life, it was an awful comment,” Ferdinand said.

Argument to be made

Ferdinand may believe that City vs Liverpool doesn’t come close to rivalling some previous Premier League title tussles, but, in our view, there’s an argument to be made.

Indeed, While Liverpool have only won one league title so far, the fact that they’ve ran City so close with incredible points tallies is a testament to the talent on show.

Back when it was Arsenal vs Manchester United for the title, anything over 80 points would usually win you the league, nowadays, that’s only good enough for a distant third.

Ferdinand may strongly disagree, but this may be the greatest rivalry the Premier League has seen.
