Aston Villa supporters are fed up.

Aston Villa fans voted with their feet last night as the team recorded one of their lowest attendance in recent history.

The Birmingham Mail reported just 11,600 fans were at Villa Park, and they might have wished they had not bothered as the team were dumped out of the Carabao Cup in a 2-0 defeat by Middlesbrough.

Among the players who particularly disappointed was Iceland international Birkir Bjarnason.

Bjarnson arrived with a solid reputation after an impressive Euro 2016, and was playing for Swiss champions Basel.

In the Championship he has been a major disappointment and manager Steve Bruce cannot seem to get the best out of him. Patience is wearing thin with the 29-year-old midfielder among fans.

It was a miserable night for Villa, who saw defender Tommy Elphick concede a penalty and get sent off on a rare start.

Getting dumped out of the cup is one thing, but their league form is hardly inspiring either, with Villa sitting in 13th position after eight games.

Bjarnason had started two matches in the Championship, and last night he did little to earn a recall.
