Jamie Carragher has claimed that Celtic should be concerned about Rangers’ ascent under Steven Gerrard.

Rangers have been crowned Scottish Premiership champions for the first time in 10 years after the Hoops slipped up on Sunday.

It was confirmation of the inevitable for Celtic in what’s been a disastrous 10-in-a-row bid, with the Bhoys – now under interim boss John Kennedy following Neil Lennon’s resignation – a whopping 20 points behind Gerrard’s side.

There will be suggestions that the major points deficit is indicative of a changing of the guard in Glasgow after the Parkhead club dominated the national game in recent years, particularly under Brendan Rodgers.

And Carragher claims that his old Liverpool team-mate is going to want to oversee a similar dynasty – including a stint in the Champions League next term.

He wrote in his column for The Telegraph: “A character like Gerrard will always live for trophies, and to feel he is somewhere where his highest ambitions are matched and can be realistically satisfied. That’s good news for Rangers if they keep backing their man, and worrying for Celtic. Gerrard is not the kind of character to rest on his laurels after this title.

“He will want to dominate Scottish football for several years and build a side capable of making headlines in the Champions League, which for obvious reasons is one of his biggest loves.”

This is quite exciting from a Rangers perspective.

He has been tentatively linked with being the next man in charge at Anfield but Carragher, a personal friend of Gerrard, seems to believe that the 40-year-old only has eyes for building on this Premiership title.

It seems to be a long-term project for Gerrard and that, if true, is a massive boost.
