World Cup winner Geoff Hurst says Tottenham Hotspur duo Harry Kane and Eric Dier are key for England as he labels their attacking partnership dangerous and exciting, Sky Sports report.
The last time and only time England won a major tournament was way back in 1966, lifting the World Cup 50 years ago on English soil following a 4-2 win over rivals Germany.
The team back then was made up of a number of West Ham United players, and this time around Roy Hodgson’s starting eleven could include as many as five Tottenham stars.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Hurst says the Spurs contingent could hold the key to England’s success and in particular Kane and Alli who have struck up an excellent partnership at club level.
“Having five players from the Spurs side, and the manner in which they played as a team this year, I think is healthy,” Hurst explained.
“Particularly the Dele Alli-Harry Kane partnership, which I would liken to myself and Martin who played at club level for a long time, since we were kids in fact.”
“Two players playing in attack who have a good understanding with each other are extremely dangerous, and for me more dangerous than any individual. It’s an exciting combination.”
England head in to the European Championships in good form having beaten Turkey, Portugal and Australia in the past couple of weeks as well as World Cup winners Germany back in March.
Kane and Alli were superb during the Three Lions’ 3-2 comeback win over Germany in Berlin, and many supporters will be desperate for Hodgson to play a similar eleven against Russia on Saturday.
However, Wayne Rooney will no doubt start, and it remains to be seen whether the Spurs duo can have the same impact playing alongside the United man.
