World Cup winner Cannavaro faces tax investigation

Former Italian international Fabio Cannavaro is under investigation for suspected tax irregularities, police have confirmed.

Fabio Cannavaro lifted the World Cup in 2006 but his reputation may be tarnished as he faces an investigation into suspected tax evasion.

Former defender Cannavaro was part of ITV’s World Cup punditry team, but he may now suffer a serious dent to his reputation.

Cannavaro has had assets seized to the value of around £710,000 as police investigate a luxury boat rental enterprise the ex-player ran with his wife.

Investigators in Naples are looking into the period between 2005 and 2010 and a statement from the authorities has confirmed that they are working “in relation to a massive tax fraud put in place by ‘Fd Service srl’, a luxury boat charter company that the former footballer and his wife Daniela Arenoso operated.”

Barcelona star Lionel Messi is also being investigated for his tax affairs and former Napoli star Diego Maradona was famously hit with a £33 million bill for alleged unpaid taxes.
