Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris started for France last night against Spain, equalling Fabian Barthez’s appearance landmark in the process.
The duo are now the most capped goalkeepers in French football history, and World Cup winner Barthez has been having his say on the current custodian.
Barthez believes Lloris could play for one of the world’s top club teams too, implying he could do better than Tottenham if he was provided with the opportunity.

He told Le Figaro: “He could play in any European top five. club. What hinders [this] … there are so many people around these transfers.
“But the little tricky passage that he experienced when he arrived in England strengthened him. And there he has done what he had to do.”
Barthez was referring to former manager Andre Villas-Boas’ decision to keep Lloris on the sidelines after he signed, preferring to play veteran Brad Friedel instead.
His choice caused uproar in France, and criticism from international manager Didier Deschamps.
