One World Cup side were given a surprise during their training session as some nearby demolition work didn’t go to plan, resulting in them having to train in front of a damaged stand.

Sweden were preparing for their final game of the group stages against Japan when a controlled demolition at the Toyota Stadium went wrong and fell towards the way of the pitch.

But, rather than land in its intended target, it collapsed into part of the stand and damaged it.

No casualties in Sweden training ground incident

Thankfully nobody in the Sweden squad was injured and they were able to continue training without any disruptions.

A statement from FC Dallas, the side whose training facilities are being used by Sweden, said: “The activity observed near FC Dallas Stadium occurred before Sweden’s training session and was part of a planned and controlled demolition within an active construction zone.

“The work was conducted using a pull-down demolition method and did not involve explosives. Training proceeded as scheduled, and Sweden completed its session as planned.”

Defender Besfort Zeneli added: “I just thought ‘What happened? As far as I know, there wasn’t a storm.’ How did the collapse occur then?”

Sweden fighting for World Cup future

It’s been a tale of two games for Graham Potter’s side this tournament after beating Tunisia 5-1 in their opening game before losing to the Netherlands by the same scoreline.

Their final opponents are Japan and with Sweden third in the group, a point should be enough to secure them a spot as one of the best third-placed teams while a win will likely be enough to put them in the top two.
