Peru are being supported in force at the World Cup in Russia this summer, but that didn’t prevent them from losing 1-0 to Denmark on Saturday evening.
Ricardo Gareca’s men had an incredible journey to the finals, and their fans are bringing colour and noise to proceedings in Russia, but Yussuf Poulsen’s winner saw Peru slip to a 1-0 defeat.
Peru now face an uphill battle in their attempts to qualify for the last 16, but one player did catch the eye in the 1-0 defeat to Denmark on Saturday.
Winger Andre Carrillo was direct and positive, using his pace to cause mayhem in the Denmark back line whilst creating chances which his teammates couldn’t take.
The 27-year-old wide man will be recognisable to some having spent last season on loan at Watford, and the Benfica misfit may be looking for another move to England – potentially with Everton.
The Times reported in January that Marco Silva discussed taking Carrillo to Goodison Park with him, and after his protracted move to Merseyside finally went through this summer, that move may yet be rekindled.
The pair worked together at Sporting and Watford, and another reunion wouldn’t be a huge surprise given Everton’s need for a winger, as Yannick Bolasie continues to struggle, and the World Cup could give Carrillo a chance to recapture some form.
After Silva left Watford in January, the speedster barely featured for the Hornets, and that seemed to have put any chance of a move to Everton on the backburner – but impressing at the World Cup could just rekindle that possibility.
Targeting players based on their World Cup displays is always dangerous, but Silva knows Carrillo inside out, and if he can coninute to impress for Peru, Silva may just feel that he is worth gambling on this summer.
