In the aftermath of Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Poland on Wednesday night, their most fluid and functional performance yet at the Qatar World Cup, Enzo Fernandez’s mood was checked somewhat after a hapless reporter confused him with former Benfica and Albiceleste ace Enzo Perez, walking out of his post-match press conference with barely a second word.
More performances like this, however, and there won’t be anyone who doesn’t know Enzo Fernandez’s name.
It’s no coincidence that Argentina, for the first time, looked like genuine challengers for football’s biggest prize during the 21-year-old’s maiden start of the tournament against a plodding, uninspired Poland.

Rewarded with a place in Lionel Scaloni’s XI following his stunning solo goal off the bench against Mexico, Enzo gave Argentina balance, drive and control. Three attributes so badly lacking in that shock opening day defeat to Saudi Arabia.
The former River Plate star showcased both sides of his game in the build up to Julian Alvarez’s well-taken finish on 67 minutes. A burst of acceleration from a standing start leaving his marker for dead. Then, a cute, clipped pass into Alvarez’s feet.
Bow down before Enzo’s trademark blend of physicality and finesse.
Liverpool like Argentina’s Qatar World Cup ace Enzo Fernandez
“One of the best players for Argentina,” beams former defender Pablo Zabaleta. “He has vision. He’s intelligent. His passing and shooting ability is great, and his work-rate is also good. He can play in front of that back four, but also as a number eight.
“He’s a young player, only 21 and he has been terrific for Benfica. I think, next summer, he will go to a big club, for sure.”
Enzo only joined Benfica in a £17 million deal a couple of months ago; the Portuguese giants fighting off competition from Wolverhampton Wanderers for arguably South America’s next best up-and-coming midfielder.
With the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool circling already, Enzo’s stay at the Estadio da Luz could be a short one (Sky Sports). A flying visit.
“Enzo does not surprise me. I know him. I see him train every day, I played against him in the Champions League,” beams Argentina captain Lionel Messi.
“He is a spectacular boy and a very important player for us.”
