The final game of the World Cup is sure to be one of the biggest sporting events to occur on US soil, and one of the most expensive as well.

Well, less so now than at peak price. Back in October, the cheapest ticket to the July 19th final was going for $13,650. Now, it’s a modest $7,123. That’s a drop of 47.8%.

There could be a few reasons for this. One is that there are now just seven teams who could make it to the New York New Jersey stadium, so fewer fans considering splashing out.

Another possible explanation is that these games, where the participants are unknown, can only attract the type of fan that can book an international flight on a few days’ notice.

With all the host nations out, falling demand (reported by TicketData) makes even more sense.

It feeds back into the widespread criticism surrounding FIFA’s dynamic ticket pricing, which their own staff warned them against months before the tournament. The tournament has been a wild commercial success, but this is an area where improvements can be made.

Who will play in the World Cup final?

This is a prediction exercise, but one worth doing if you’re considering breaking the bank for a ticket to the World Cup final.

France will face the winner of Spain vs Belgium, while Argentina, Switzerland, Norway and England are vying for a place in the other semi-final.

There is of course scope for Norway, and even Switzerland, to pull off an upset. But if we’re ranking their chances, it’s looking like Argentina vs France, Argentina vs Spain, England vs France and England vs Spain.

All of those would be electric.

If you’re considering attending, waiting to be sure of the participants is almost guaranteed to mean paying a higher price.
