England were handed a brand new shirt design by Nike for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and it was given a fantastic debut as the Three Lions defeated Iran by a 6-2 scoreline.
However, a few supporters have noticed something odd about Nike’s effort.
Why is there a lower case i on the England shirt?
Well, Nike have gone for a heavy metal style font on the England shirts, with the likes of Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire’s shirts having all the letters in bold capitals, apart from i.
England have already addressed this tweak to the shirts in an official statement.
The Three Lions wrote: “The angular typeface applied to the name and number – and the Three Lions graphic on the inside back of the shirt – is inspired by industrial fonts used by heavy metal rock bands throughout England.
“Just like the home kit, the typeface used on the name and number takes inspiration from angular, industrial fonts used by English heavy metal rock bands.”
You can see an example of the strange font below.

Regardless of comments about the new shirt, Nike were surely pleased to see England run riot in their new strip, which received plenty of exposure as Gareth Southgate oversaw a resounding win.
It was set to be the biggest victory of any nation in the group stage so far, before Spain hammered Costa Rica by a 7-0 scoreline in Group E.
England could make history in strange Nike shirt
As peculiar as the design is, England could end up making history in their strange Nike shirt.
So far, most of the favourites for the World Cup have floundered, with Argentina and Germany losing their opening games against Saudi Arabia and Japan respectively.
Therefore, England have as good a chance as any top nation at the World Cup, and confidence will surely be high after the emphatic 6-2 win over Iran.
