David Beckham has been speaking to FIFA about the World Cup in Qatar, ahead of the first ever tournament to be held mid-season.
The unique edition of the World Cup will begin on Monday 21st November, with the final set to take place on Sunday 18th December.
Many people have questioned how footballers will cope with the mid-season tournament, although Beckham has now explained why it’s a good thing for them.
What’s the story?
Well, speaking to FIFA, the 46-year-old said: “As an England player, we went into every World Cup after a gruelling season in the Premier League, which is one of the toughest leagues in the world.
“When you come to the end of the season, you’re exhausted and it takes a while to recover – more than a few weeks. This time, it will be mid-season, so this is perfect for English players – and other teams – who can go into the tournament with a real opportunity.”
Beckham makes a good point.
In our view, it seems strange that Premier League players could be winning the World Cup in December 18th, before returning to domestic football in time for Boxing Day fixtures.
That doesn’t leave much time to celebrate, although – as Beckham states – from a physical point of view, they should be fit and ready to deliver one of the most exciting World Cup tournaments of all time.
World Cup 2022 could be special
Understandably, a number of people seem to be disappointed by the fact the World Cup will not take place in the summer.
Shorts and t-shirts will be replaced by jumpers and big coats, while there certainly won’t be any pints being thrown around London in the freezing cold.
However, in terms of the quality of football, it could be the best World Cup in history.
The likes of Harry Kane, Neymar, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin De Bruyne and N’Golo Kante will be in top condition, ready to fight it out for football’s biggest prize.
Who knows? If it ends up being better than the summer edition, then a mid-season World Cup could become a regular occurrence.
