Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer has now told the club that he wants to transfer to Bayern Munich in January. The Swiss is also a target for Tottenham Hotspur.

That is according to Sky Germany, which reports Sommer has told Die Fohlen, his manager Daniel Farke and his teammates that he wants to leave. But Borussia-Park chiefs are loath to let the 34-year-old leave despite his and Der FCB’s intent desire to finalise a move soon.

Bayern Munich and Sommer both would have liked to have completed his transfer before the Bavarian’s winter training camp. But the Allianz Arena natives could not convince their Bundesliga rival to sell one of their most important players before flying to Doha on Friday.

Tottenham are rivalling Bayer Munich with an interest in Sommer’s transfer

Tottenham are rivalling Bayern Munich with their own interest in Sommer’s transfer from Borussia Monchengladbach, per Dean Jones. Spurs have sought to explore what the Swiss hopes to do next with his future at Borussia-Park uncertain. But Der FCB have a clear lead.

Sommer has already agreed to personal terms with Bayern Munich, who view the 80-cap ace as their top target. Der FCB are determined to sign a new shot-stopper in January after losing Manuel Neuer for the rest of the term. He has undergone surgery for a leg fracture.

Bayern Munich would hand Sommer, who is out of contract at Borussia Monchengladbach this June, a deal through to 2025. Yet despite the goalkeeper also telling Die Fohlen, Farke and his teammates in no uncertain terms that he wants to leave, a switch remains blocked.

Borussia Monchengladbach have not given up on a new contract for Sommer

Borussia Monchengladbach are loath to let Sommer leave in January given his importance at Borussia-Park. Sporting director Roland Virkus also remains hopeful that he can get the Morges native to sign a new contract. But fresh terms is not on Sommer’s mind right now.

Instead, Sommer sees a move to Bayern Munich as the only desirable option and a chance to sign one last big contract. The Swiss joined Borussia Monchengladbach back in 2014. He also set a new Bundesliga record last August for the most saves in one match with 19.

He did it against Der FCB, after which Farke said he ‘produced a world-class performance’, via Bundesliga.com. Now, Sommer hopes to leave Borussia Monchengladbach for Bayern Munich – thus rejecting any potential transfer to Tottenham – during the January window.
