Leeds United are facing a battle to keep hold of their best players this summer after failing to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

The Yorkshire side will remain in the Championship for the 2024-25 season after losing out to Southampton in the play-off final.

Leeds United amassed 90 points but their failure to return to the top flight meant they were vulnerable to losing their best players.

Homegrown hero Archie Gray has already departed Elland Road in a £30million move to Tottenham, while interest remains in attacking duo Wilfried Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville.

Another who could be on his way out of Leeds is goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who has been with the club since joining on an initial loan deal in 2019.

Daniel Farke is a big fan of Meslier and the Leeds boss called his shot-stopper “world class” after his performance against Norwich last season.

Illan Meslier wanted by Roberto De Zerbi

Meslier’s impressive performances between the sticks means he is one of many Leeds players who are being targeted this summer.

According to a report from French outlet L’Equipe, Olympique Marseille are looking to sign a new goalkeeper and have included Meslier in a four-man shortlist.

The Ligue 1 side, who are now managed by former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, also included Brice Samba, Alvaro Valles and Filip Jorgensen on their shopping list.

De Zerbi was linked to multiple Premier League jobs this summer but has since signed a three-year deal with Marseille after his shock Brighton exit.

The idea of returning to his home country could entice Meslier and it now comes down to whether the Leeds hierarchy believe he is replaceable this summer.

Meslier won the Championship Golden Glove last season after keeping 19 clean sheets.
