It was a bittersweet night for Liverpool on Sunday.
Yes, they were dumped out of the FA Cup by the one club they don’t want to be eliminated by from anything.
But there were still very encouraging signs from Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s side lost 3-2 away to Manchester United and prior to kickoff, the Reds had scored just once in their past five Premier League games.
For whatever reason, the likes of Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane haven’t been looking like the star-studded triumvirate that everybody knows them to be.
But there were signs that at least two of them were starting to get their groove back.
It was Salah who scored both of Liverpool’s goals at Old Trafford and both were set up by his £29 million Brazilian team-mate, who oozed the sort of confidence that he’d been majorly lacking in recent weeks.
Some of Firmino’s touches and build-up play were stunning to behold and Jermaine Jenas raved about him during his commentary.
He said on BBC: “Roberto Firmino’s touches in the last 15 minutes have been world class, he’s a big reason why Liverpool are back in this game.”
You could argue that Liverpool – who are six points behind United at the top of the Premier League – have a bigger game coming up in the form of Spurs away next week.
And maybe, just maybe, it’s a good thing that Salah and Firmino had brilliant performances yesterday, despite the defeat.
