Damien Duff is a big fan of the Celtic prospect it seems.
Damien Duff has told Celtic’s official website that he has been blown away by Mikey Johnston’s form in pre-season so far.
The 20-year-old is one of the most exciting prospects to come through the academy at Lennoxtown since perhaps left-back Kieran Tierney.
Former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers gave him a taste of Premiership football last season and the young attacker finished the campaign with five goals.
But Johnston, who scored twice in a 6-1 friendly win over Austrian side Pinkafeld this week, only played six times for the Hoops once Neil Lennon took over from Rodgers in February but, if Duff’s assessment is anything to go by, he could take next season by storm.
The Republic of Ireland legend, one of Lennon’s coaches, told the club’s official website: “His ability is ridiculous really. Some of the stuff I’ve seen from him has been world-class.
“Again, the team we were playing perhaps weren’t the greatest of opponents, but for Mikey, it’s a big season for him and I’d love to see him kick on.”
The Scottish Sun reported earlier this month that Panathinaikos wanted Johnston on loan, but Lennon should obviously keep him.
Going by Duff’s comments, he is impressing in a big way in training lately and it’d be mad to let him leave, even if it’s only on loan.
