According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wanted to join Chelsea in the January transfer window.

It has been reported that contact was made with Chelsea on behalf of the Gabon international striker, but nothing materialised due to high wages.

The 31-year-old former Borussia Dortmund striker was reportedly keen on a move to Frank Lampard’s side in the middle of the season.

Aubameyang, who is out of contract at Arsenal next summer, is set to start for Mikel Arteta’s side in the FA Cup final against London and Premier League rivals Chelsea on Saturday.

Unlikely transfer

Given the importance of Aubameyang in the current Arsenal team, it is unlikely that the Gunners would have sanctioned a move to Chelsea, especially in the middle of the season.

After all, there were still hopes that the North London outfit could finish in the Premier League top four.

While Arsenal will lose Aubameyang on a free transfer next summer if he does not sign a new contract, it is hard to see them sell him to London rivals Chelsea this summer even if the striker lowers his wage demands to make the transfer happen.

Described by Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville as “world class” in February 2020 on Skysports.com, Aubameyang scored 22 goals and provided three assists in the Premier League for the Gunners this past season, according to WhoScored.
