A former Everton midfielder and a striker who broke a Wayne Rooney record feature…

Enjoy the latest edition of our World Football video feature, every Tuesday and Friday at 1pm

1) Vonlanthen retires

Johan Vonlanthen – Remember him? If his name rings a bell, it is because he is the man who broke Wayne Rooney’s record to become the European Championships youngest ever scorer back in 2004 for Switzerland. His career never hit the same heights as Rooney, and eight years on this week he confirmed the sad news he is to retire from the game. Now 26, he needs a knee operation to continue playing, and he said he has fallen out of love with the game and is not prepared to go through with it. Perhaps he’ll make a shock comeback in a few years time, but for now check out this video which includes some of his best goals.

2) Matias Fernandez takes Chile top

With Brazil not needing to qualify many would predict Argentina to be top of the South American World Cup qualifying group. Well they are not far off, a game in hand could change that, but for now it is Chile who top the region courtesy of a 2-0 win over Venezuela. They left it late, with Argentine-born winger Matias Fernandez breaking the deadlock on 85 minutes. A former South American footballer of the year and Villareal player, 26-year-old Fernandez now plays his club football with Benfica.

3) Nasser does a Zidane

When Al-Wasl boss Diego Maradona told his players to go and play like Zidane, he surely didn’t mean this. Controversial goalkeeper Majed Nasser has been banned for the rest of the season after a headbutt. He was previously banned for 17 games for slapping a rival coach, and the UAE international was banned by his own club. Watch the incident below.

4) Kilbane breaks the ice

Former Irish international Kevin Kilbane has been making waves in Poland, for his rap skills. A bizarre YouTube video has emerged of the former Everton star in a bar rapping to Vanilla Ice’s ‘Ice Ice Baby’. He’s actually quite good. Check it out.

5) Emerson downs Santos then gets sent off

The Copa Libertadores is at the semi-final stage in South America, and Corinthians kicked off the all-Brazil semi-final by winning the first leg 1-0. The goalscorer was former Brazil under-20 star and Qatar international, Emerson. The 33-year-old curled in a cracking effort early on, but was sent off later in the game. It sets it up perfectly for the second leg, and spectators will be in for a treat. See the goal below.
