1) Trezeguet brings River Plate back to the top flight
River Plate’s rivalry with Boca Juniors is the stuff of legend around the world, so when the 34-time Argentine champions were relegated last season it was a real shock. They signed former Juventus striker David Trezeguet in January, and last weekend his goals sealed their return to the top flight by a single point. He scored twice, leading club president Daniel Pasarella to declare ‘We have woken from a nightmare’. Watch fans go wild in celebration following his 89th minute strike.
2) Roncaglia puts Boca Juniors one up
The first leg of the Copa Libertadores final took place in midweek, and it saw Argentine giants go up against Brazilians Corinthians, bidding to win the trophy for the first time. Boca went 1-0 up through defender Facundo Roncaglia, to cheers of the watching Diego Maradona. Roncaglia is reported to have an agreement to sign with Fiorentina after the tournament.
3) Romarinho ties it up
Boca’s advantage was short lived, young Brazilian sensation Romarinho scored his third goal in a week to tie the game a 1-1, leaving it evenly poised going into the second leg. Corinthians now surely hold the advantage, as they host the deciding game next Wednesday. You can watch Romarinho’s deft chip below.
4) Dorlan Pabon heads to Italy
One of the stars of the Libertadores earlier rounds was Colombian attacker Dorlan Pabon. He scored seven in the competition and has 15 in 19 for his club this season in total. He has now signed with Italian club Parma, for a bargain £4 million. Tottenham were previously reported to be interested. Watch an incredible free-kick scored by Pabon below, an astounding strike.
5) West Ham say bye bye to Barrera
Pablo Barrera, the Mexican winger signed by West Ham on the back of a promising 2010 World Cup, has left the club. He cost £3 million but never settled, making just six league starts. He is heading back to Mexico to sign with Cruz Azul. For West Ham fans who never really got a chance to see his talents, here is what he can do.
