1) Pippo Inzaghi scores on Milan farewell
One of the greatest goalpoachers to grace the modern game has played his last for AC Milan. And aptly the striker scored too. Inzaghi, now 38, is the second highest ever Champions League scorer with 70 goals and has been at Milan since 2001 after a four year spell with Juventus. Naturally his goal against Novara was the winner, and his celebration with fans and teammates was more than emotional. You can watch it below.
2) Beckham has still got it
With a place in the Olympics up for grabs, David Beckham has every incentive to keep his level of performance for LA Galaxy as high as ever. The reigning MLS Champions season is well underway, and on Sunday night against Montreal Impact Beckham played a starring role. His trademark free-kick was the game’s taking point, bending one in like only he can. Watch the goal in crystal clear quality below.
3) Del Piero goes one better than Inzaghi
Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero said Ciao to his fans this weekend, and like Inzaghi it was the perfect farewell, scoring in the 3-1 win over Atalanta. He went one better, by lifting the Scudetto after the game. It has been a remarkable season for both Juventus and Del Piero, with the Turin club crowned champions, and perhaps it is the perfect time for the maestro to bow out. Like Inzaghi he has no immediate retirement plans, and he has even been linked with a Premier League move.
4) Fair play in Norway reaches a whole new level
When you score a once in a lifetime 60 yard special, you should celebrate, right? Well in the Norwegian top flight this weekend, FC Brann scored one, bouncing over the goalkeeper, but they simply looked embarrassed to have done so. Instead of enjoying the moment, they apologeticly allowed rivals Lillestrom to walk through their defence and net a comeback goal to cancel it out. It has been descrived as the ‘ultimate fair play goal’.
5) Montpellier close on historic French title
Substitute Karim Ait-Fana came off the bench to score a dramatic injury time winner for Montpellier to keep them in pole position for the Ligue One title. Nene had bagged a hat-trick for rivals PSG to keep the pressure on in their game, and Montpellier had seemed destined for a goalless draw against Eden Hazard’s Lille; until Ait-Fana’s big moment. Needless to say it sparked huge celebrations. Now the club need just a single point against Auxerre, who were relegated this weekend, to secure the title in the final game.
