Damiao in the goals
The latest Brazilian season kicked off this weekend, with a host of interesting scores. Champions Corinithians slipped to a 1-0 loss the Fluminense, but of most interest to scouts across Europe, was striking sensation Leandro Damiao scoring again. He bagged the opener in Internacional’s 2-0 win over Coritiba, with a strike which will have had onlookers purring. Whether any top clubs can find themselves the £30 million to sign him this summer remains to be seen, but he will be a name regularly linked in the gossip columns. You can watch the goal below.
Utaka wins Montpellier first French title
Big spending Manchester City and Chelsea may have won England and Europe’s top titles, but rich PSG could not do the same in France. Montpellier’s success could, in American terms be described as a ‘Cinderella story’ with the underdogs emerging as unlikely champions. It was their first ever league title, clinched on Sunday night with a win over Auxerre. Former Portsmouth striker John Utaka hit the winner, to send fans wild, and crown a new chapter in French football history.
Falcao nets stunner
While Chelsea were busy clinching the Champions League, their top striking target- Colombian hitman Falcao was busy scoring a world class goal in a friendly. Europa League winners Atletico Madrid were playing a friendly against America de Cali, a top side in Falcao’s homeland. It was quite the return, the volley is up there with the best best. No wonder the big clubs are interested.
De Rosario scores after just 57 seconds
In North America the MLS season has been underway for over a month, and Toronto FC are still searching for their first point. Their task against DC United was made even more of an uphill struggle when former player Dwayne De Rosario scored after just 57 seconds. The game ended 2-0 and the Canadians remain rooted to the foot of the table. De Rosario is a Canadian national who is now 34 and is a former league MVP and has played his entire career across the Atlantic, save for a brief spell in lower league German football as a youngster.
Cavani helps Napoli win Copa Italia
Napoli crushed Juventus’ hopes of a dream double this weekend, beating them 2-0 in the Coppa Italia. We’ve uncovered some superb fan footage from the stands of the game, including Edinson Cavani’s penalty opener. The stands go crazy when it goes in, and it is well worth a watch.
