‘Worked so hard’: Redknapp says Spurs ace has a similar work ethic to Frank Lampard

Speaking on the Outside The Box Podcast, Harry Redknapp has been speaking to Jermain Defoe about the idea of being a natural finisher.

Defoe himself was, of course, one of the most natural goalscorers you’re likely to ever seen, and Redknapp saw that from a young age.

Redknapp says that Defoe didn’t have to work on his finishing at all due to the fact he just had the striker’s instinct.

However, when he was asked about whether or not you can teach that level of finishing, Redknapp gave two interesting examples.

Indeed, the ex-Spurs boss says that both Harry Kane and Frank Lampard had a similar work ethic in that they both had to work incredibly hard to become better and better at scoring goals.

Kane and Lampard had to work

Redknapp spoke about Kane and Lampard.

“You were just a natural finisher, you had that instinct that you can’t just give to people,” Redknapp told Defoe.

“Do you think you can coach that?” Defoe asked.

“I think you can improve it with people. People like Harry Kane may have had to work at his game and become better and better, Frank Lampard worked so hard to become better and better too. With you, you were just a natural as a kid and you were probably doing it at the age of 10,” Redknapp said.

Paid off

Harry Kane and Frank Lampard may not have been the most natural finishers in history from a young age, but through hard work they grew into two of the best goalscorers ever.

Kane is on track to become England and the Premier League’s highest scorer, while Lampard has scored more goals than any other midfield player in the history of this league.

Some players just have the knack of scoring, and others have to work at it, but Kane and Lampard show that if you want something badly enough, you can make it happen.
