Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte has said that Cristian Romero will have to work much harder now due to more expectations on him, as quoted in Football.London.

Romero was an integral part of the Argentina team that won the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

The 24-year-old central defender is back in training with Tottenham and is available for the Premier League match against Aston Villa at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on New Year’s Day.

Tottenham boss Conte has praised Romero for his effort in training at Hotspur Way, but the Italian has warned the £165,000-a-week (Spotrac) Argentina international centre-back that he will have to work harder now.

Conte said about Romero: “From what I saw in the last few days during the training session, I have seen him with great focus and with great desire to come back and play with us and to go with his mind into Tottenham’s situation.

“For sure I am really happy for him and for us it is important to have in our team two World Cup champions in Hugo and Cuti.

“But he has to know very well that now starts the more difficult period for him because the expectation is going to become high for him.

“For this reason he has to work much more and continue to work, especially don’t lose the desire to improve himself.”

High standards

Cristian Romero is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and is one of the first names on the Tottenham Hotspur teamsheet when he is fit and available.

Romero has had injury problems this season, but he is now fit and available.

Tottenham are aiming to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season and have also reached the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League.

In our opinion, if Spurs are to be successful in their quest this season, then Romero will have to be on top of his game throughout.
