Liverpool could be forgiven for thinking they’re cursed with regards to the central defensive position – especially after what happened last night.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have all been ruled out of the Reds’ season but those three are the only senior and experienced centre-backs that began the campaign, after they failed to replace Dejan Lovren last summer.

Liverpool did sign Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies on transfer deadline day last month but O Jogo claimed that they failed with a late £35 million bid to sign David Carmo of Braga.

It would’ve been interesting to see if Michael Edwards renewed an interest in the 21-year-old this summer but, going by images from last night, it looks like it’ll be a while before Carmo is back and playing regularly.

That’s because the young stalwart suffered what looked to be a broken ankle in a clash against Porto last night.

Luis Diaz was issued a red card after television replays showed that he accidentally sank his studs into Carmo’s ankle while trying to get a shot away, resulting in the latter being stretchered off.

Here’s how Liverpool fans reacted to the injury on Twitter:
