Ex-Tottenham stars Gareth Bale and Luka Modric saw off the challenge of Liverpool to win the Champions League.

Former England international Jonathan Woodgate looks on before the English Premier League football match between Chelsea and Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge in London on May 8, 2017.

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid defender Jonathan Woodgate has congratulated both Luka Modric and Gareth Bale on Instagram after the duo combined to win the Champions League final on Saturday evening.

Zinedine Zidane’s men earned a 3-1 win over Liverpool in Kyiv, as Reds goalkeeper Loris Karius suffered a nightmare performance in goal that saw him at fault for Karim Benzema’s opener and Bale’s second strike.

Real Madrid's Welsh forward Gareth Bale (R) is congratulated by his teammate Real Madrid's Croatian midfielder Luka Modric after scoring the the 2-1 during the UEFA Champions League final...

Bale came off the bench to turn the tie on its head with an excellent brace, the first of which saw him score one of the best ever goals to have been scored in a Champions League final, with an overhead kick from Marcelo’s cross.

Woodgate, who played for Real and alongside Bale and Modric at Spurs, applauded the duo on Instagram after they won their fourth Champions League winners’ medal since leaving north London.

Bale has been linked with a return to Spurs of late after falling down the pecking order under Zidane, with the French boss preferring Cristiano Ronaldo, Isco, Karim Benzema and even Marco Asensio at times.

However, BBC Sport claim his huge release clause and astronomical wages will price Spurs out of a move this summer, despite his future at the Santiago Bernabeu being all but over.

Modric, meanwhile, continues to boast a reputation that sees him considered one of the best central midfielders in the world. He will now enjoy a well-deserved rest before this summer’s World Cup, where he will represent Croatia.
