Tottenham Hotspur have one of the strongest backlines in European football.

Former Spurs centre-back Jonathan Woodgate raved about current Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld, when writing a column for the club’s match day programme on Saturday, labelling him as one of the best three centre-backs in the league, and quoted via FootballLondon.

The Belgian has missed a large chunk of Spurs’ season already, and his absence from the fist-team highlighted just how important he has become to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The 27-year-old is now back to peak condition physically, and his return to the fold has made Tottenham look so much more solid defensively.

And Woodgate, who made 65 appearances for the Lilywhites, listed four key attributes which make Alderweireld such a good player, when writing his column for Tottenham’s match day programme, and quoted via FootballLondon:

“He’s in the top three best centre-backs in the Premier League. He can do everything. I watched him at Ajax, Atletico Madrid and Southampton. He was top notch there and then he came to Spurs. He’s shown a lot at the Lane already. He can hit diagonal passes and hit them easily, that’s something in his locker. He’s tenacious in the tackle, quick and he’s aggressive.”

Spurs now sit in second position in the Premier League table, just seven points adrift of league leaders Chelsea.

And Alderweireld will have even more responsibility on his shoulders over the next couple of months, following the news that Jan Vertonghen is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to an ankle injury.
