Speaking on the Sky Sports Football Podcast, Jamie Redknapp has been discussing England’s game against Iran and Mason Mount’s performance.

Liverpool have recently been linked with Mount, and now, a former Liverpool midfielder has been singing his praises.

Most of the headlines on Monday evening went to the five goalscorers for the Three Lions as the likes of Raheem Sterling, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka all put in standout performances, but Redknapp reserved a bit of praise for Mount.

Indeed, Redknapp says that Mount’s showing won’t be mentioned too much, but he states that he was very impressed by the Chelsea ace, describing his showing as ‘exceptional’.

Redknapp hails Mount

Redknapp spoke highly of the Liverpool transfer target.

“It was a Rolls Royce of a performance. I was so impressed with him and I was so impressed by Declan Rice. The other player as well that won’t get much of a mention, but he was under pressure before the game, I thought Mason Mount was exceptional as well, he was brilliant while he was on, he won the second balls, he was first to it his passing was excellent, I was really impressed with him today,” Redknapp said.

Made England tick

Mount may not have made the highlight reel on Monday afternoon, but he certainly made the Three Lions tick.

So many of England’s attacks were crafted through lengthy passing sequences, and more often than not, Mount was the centre-piece of those pretty, patterned plays.

The midfielder just got everything right against Iran, he didn’t let the pressure get to him and he didn’t put a foot wrong.

There’s a reason Gareth Southgate has always trusted Mount, and it’s because he’s an incredibly reliable operator.
