Jamie Carragher has joked that Aston Villa boss, Steven Gerrard, ‘won’t give’ Derby Country manager, Wayne Rooney, any loans after he picked Paul Scholes over the Liverpool legend.

The Manchester United icon was sharing his picks for the Premier League’s Hall of Fame, with Gerrard, who spent his entire career at Liverpool, already an inductee.

But Rooney was sharing how, if it was up to him, his first two choice picks would have been the Premier League’s all-time goalscorer, Alan Shearer, alongside Scholes – instead, it was the Newcastle hero and Thierry Henry.

That’s when Carragher proceeded to as Rooney whether he would take Scholes over his former Anfield teammate.

This is how the conversation unfolded between the duo on Sky Sports

“So you say, Shearer and Scholes should be the first two (in the hall of fame),” said Carragher. “That’s a big statement that.”

Rooney responded: “I think playing with Scholes for a long time and seeing what he did. I know Thierry Henry is arguably the greatest player in Premier League history.

“Shearer has to go in for his goalscoring record. Scholes for what he did for you in the team and how he dictated games for the team. I think he is underrated, certainly not with myself or Manchester United fans.”

Carragher then asked: “So, Scholes ahead of Gerrard?”

When Rooney answered ‘yes’, the former centre-back then added: “You won’t be getting any loan players from Aston Villa.”

Rooney responded: “I haven’t been getting any anyway.”

It’s always mentioned, but the one thing that alluded Gerrard during his legendary career was the Premier League title.

The Villa boss did help Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title last season and now he starts life in England’s top-flight as a manager.

Will the Premier League crown come his way whilst he’s in the dugout?

It perhaps would be fitting if he does, and whilst he wouldn’t kick a ball, it would also complete his legacy, as both a player and a coach.
